Networking (Part 9)

The Album Network was set up to generate interest in alternative music. It would develop and maintain radio and retail charts of up and coming artists through college and alternative radio stations and nationwide retail record outlets.

These charts also provided weekly record review columns as well as weekly summarisations of goings-on in the alternative music sector and from time-to-time a CD, like this one, would be released.

Most were hit and miss, but depending on your tastes, you could have got lucky and discovered some decent songs.

The Trashcans’ second single (according to the sleeve notes) ‘Obscurity Knocks’ is included on this one alongside Pop Will Eat Itself, The Hollow Men, Inspiral Carpets and the Chicksaw Mudd Puppies.

Inspiring stuff!

…tells us the story of several individuals, all of them living in Los Angeles. A musically gifted homeless boy, a 15 year old girl raised by dodgy parents, a young and confused gay man and a sexy and successful pot-smoking estate agent who has an attraction for losers. What do most of these characters have in common? A dream or a certain ambition but also a lack of money…due to this fact they find themselves hanging out with the wrong crowd and doing things they never thought they would. Eventually their paths cross.

What has this got to do with the Trashcan Sinatras?

Well about 40 minutes in, the musically gifted homeless boy is about to pop his cherry with a young, no-bad looking groupie. He lies on the bed while she sticks on the old iPod and just as he’s about to be popped, the first notes of the Trashcans’ “How Can I Apply” emanate from the speakers. Blink and you’ll miss it though as it’s only on screen for a few bars before moving to a different scene.

I didn’t hang around for the rest of the film, as up until the Trashcans’ cameo role it wisnae very good.

Straight to bargain bin I’d say.

Food good. Plenty to drink. Hotel* wonderful. Weather pish!

Sums up my 5-day endurance test away to T in the Park 2010 perfectly. Yes, I’ve been on a wee holiday folks, so apologies for the lack of FHJ posts.

There’s not a lot been happening in the land of Trashcan memorabilia, but I did come across these two postcards from way back in 1993. These were sent out to fans on the mailing list updating them on what the band were up to.

The first one is for the release of second album ‘I’ve Seen Everything’ and the second one is for the release of the single of the same name. This one also includes some tour dates.

Small flyer from the Trashcan’s 2010 gig at the Magic Stick in Detroit supported by the The Candles – a solo project by former Lemonheads bass player Josh Lattanzi.

The Magic Stick – better known in years gone by for spinning bowling balls and billiards – is now recognised as one of Detroit’s top live music venues.

Thanks to Roger Brennan from MusicManiacs in Canada for the flyer and photos.
