Way back when the Trashcans were dipping their toes in the music business, they supported They Might Be Giants on a few early 1990 dates.

One of which was at London University’s Union – LULU for short. Here’s NME’s Stephen Dalton’s review…

Number One was a British pop music weekly magazine which ran for around nine years, mostly during the 1980s.

Aimed, mainly at the teenage market, one of the most popular aspects was that it published the singles and albums charts every week. However, the magazine was in direct competition to another popular magazine at the time – Smash Hits.

Smash Hits had a bigger circulation (almost tenfold), more features and articles and was of a similar price, so it was no surprise when Number One eventually shut up shop around 1992. The final issue carried details of the features and interviews that would appear in the next issue, but was never published.

History lesson over.

Here’s a review from Stuart Butler of the Trashcan’s gig at the London ICA (The Institute of Contemporary Arts) from way back – 28 June 1990, to be precise.

Not too many bands would entertain the idea of playing in a fan’s house. But the Trashcan Sinatras did exactly that in June 2010 in Portland, Oregon.

The band liked it so much, they were at it again a few months later as part of their mini-acoustic-american tour. Taking in Portland again (same house), they ventured to Los Angeles and played, for the first time ever, Las Vegas – uh-huh!

These intimate gigs could have been hit or miss, but from what I’ve read they were very much a hit. The drink flowed as did the tears and music and I believe there was a marriage proposal flung in for good measure – I hope she said yes!

Here’s the posters – designed once again by the talented Mr Shane Locke – from all three shows including the official tour poster…

…was the advice given to the Trashcans by one-time NME editor, Steve Lamacq.

With little or no help from the skinny git and his newspaper, the Trashcans thankfully did. Stick. At. It.

As you already know there’s a bit of history between Mr Lamacq and the Trashcans. Here he gives a review of an early gig at the London Borderline.

…so said John Vanderbleu.

Here’s his review, which appeared in Melody Maker, of an early Trashcan gig in Inverness. Support bands who also appeared at the Gateway that night were Ira Hayes (who I know nothing) and bastardised acoustic folk/rockabilly experts, the Nyah Fearties.
