Networking (Part 1)
The Album Network has championed its belief that In-Store Play sells new music and breaks new bands. The chart, running from around 1981, developed into a vital barometer of the leading edge on new music sales.
Released to record stores throughout America, these CDs were designed to turn record store owners and their customers on to some very cool music.
This CD – released in April of 1991 – was the first in a series of ‘Tune-Up’ discs and included the Trashcans’ ‘Obscurity Knocks’.
The sleeve notes have this as the TCS second single – oops!

Details is an American monthly men’s magazine (no, not one of those ones). Described as a sort of Vogue for men it has been published since the early 1980s and twice a year includes a free CD.
This one from 1994 includes the Trashcans’ ‘Hayfever’ alongside other artists such as David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, Run DMC and ahem, Duran Duran.

A rare sample CD from Polydor in Japan.
There’s not much info on this release I’m afraid, but it includes tracks from artists such as The Beautiful South, Happy Mondays, The Soup Dragons, Tha La’s and of course the Trashcan Sinatras.
Two tracks from ‘Cake’ are featured here – ‘Obscurity Knocks’ and ‘Only Tongue Can Tell’.

Autopsy
…was a fanzine published by TCS list members Sarah Frederiksen and Christopher Dooley. A one issue booklet dedicated to – in their own words – ‘Scotland’s Best Kept Secret’.
Stretching to twenty pages it documents the band’s adventures up until, and including, the ‘I’ve Seen Everything’ era. It includes a discography, band interview, lyrics, photographs and some pretty dodgy hairstyles.
There were around 250 copies printed, some of which accompanied the bootleg ‘Iceburg’ single, but this record had no connection with Sarah or Chris.
The two tracks on the single were ‘Iceburg’ on the A-side and ‘Remember Phil’ on the flip side, which was, of course ‘Twisted and Bent’.
A great wee piece of history.

‘Select’ was a UK music magazine of the 1990s which was particularly known for covering Britpop. The magazine launched in October 1990 and folded a decade later in 2000, mirroring the rise and decline of the Britpop scene with which it became synonymous.
Here’s a cassette given away free with the May 1996 issue, which includes a track from the Trashcans – the mislabeled ‘Pop Palace’.
Note: All bands – with the exception of the Trashcans – are printed on the front cover.
Typical eh?
