…only if you look hard enough that is – the rare sight of the sample CD for fourth album, ‘Weightlifting’.
The little white squares on the reverse of the inlay card would have been numbered to indicate which tracks were included – 5 or 6 songs normally. This copy had no indication of how many were included, but when I popped it into the old CD player – 12 tracks were duly displayed. A ‘Brucie’ bonus don’t you think.
The band photography was by Colin Dunsmuir and the sleeve was designed by Kevin Hobbs.

US promo poster to support the release of fourth album ‘Weightlifting’.
Been meaning to upload this poster for ages. There, it’s done. Now move along.

Apologies for the lack of ‘action’ on FHJ recently – time wasn’t on my side.
But I’d like to say welcome back with, well, the promo of ‘Welcome Back’ funnily enough.
Released in the Summer of 2004 this was a single track promo CD sent to hip and cool radio stations for a wee spin before the release of fourth album ‘Weightlifting’. The black sheep of the album, ‘Welcome Back’ sits a bit out of place with the other album tracks, but it’s still a belter.
As you can see, there’s not much to it, just the plain old CD and a photocopied insert.
It’s rare!

In my quest to find all kinds of ‘trash’, I sometimes come across some unusual pieces – like this copy of ‘Weightlifting’.
Here is what they call a ‘sample CD’ – it’s not a promo or anything. It is an original CD, the same as regular retail store product, the only difference being the sample factory labels.
These ‘samples’ are from a factory used for CD manufacturing, and have at least one large sticker directly on the artwork containing various production data which usually includes hand-writing.
Occasionally there may be other stickers or markings on other parts of the artwork, such as a descriptive label, like the one shown here.
A rare and unusual item – but interesting nonetheless.

…when ‘Weightlifting’ was released, and I obtained as many copies as I could – as you would with such a fine album.
Here we have the UK and US versions (deluxe and Japanese versions previously posted). Same songs of course, slightly different packaging – but then I like that sort of thing.
Both released in jewel case format the CD is identical, but the real difference is in the lyric booklet, where the background images have been transposed onto different pages – clever eh?

Promo release from spinART of the ‘Weightlifting’ album. There are no labels, inserts or covers on this one – just the plain old CD.
There was another promo of this with a cover which you can see here – but I’ve no idea if this is the same, less the packaging.
Another strange one.

Japanese import of fourth album ‘Weightlifting’. This release included the bonus track ‘In Capitals’.
The usual Japanese attention to detail is here to see in the packaging, which comes with a lyric booklet and obi-strip.
On the second bottom photograph, you’ll see a small box with 04.9.29 printed. I think this refers to the release date in Japan, which was before the UK release in October.
The photography on this CD is excellent.

1-track US promo for ‘All The Dark Horses’.
This CD included 10 bonus tracks from the ‘Fez’ album (the insert states only 9).

Released in the UK only as a 1-track radio promo, ‘All The Dark Horses’ was surprisingly the only single from fourth album ‘Weightlifting’.
Photographs by Martin Gray. Sleeve design by Emlyn Firth.

Some copies, like this one, came with a press release…

An advance preview release of album ‘Weightlifting’.
This CD included the final mixes of All The Dark Horses, Usually and Weightlifting. It also included 11 live tracks from Le Bataclan, in Paris, from November 10, 1996. There were plans to release this as a separate CD with the title “Francis in Paris (Paris is in France)”, but this never materialised.
The ‘Weightlifting EP’ was released to coincide with the sold-out shows at the Troubadour in Los Angeles in 2004 and the band’s appearance at the South-By-Southwest festival of the same year.
I like the illustrations on this release – reminds me of the old first-aid books from school.
