Here’s a copy of James Kirk’s debut album, ‘You Can Make It If You Boogie’.
Kirk, was a founder member of Orange Juice who alongside Edwyn Collins, created some classics of Scottish indie. It was James who wrote the great ‘Felicity’ as well as ‘Wan Light’, two of the high points from debut Orange Juice album, ‘You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever’, in 1982.
Kirk left the band shortly after this and his musical output became pretty sporadic, so it came as a great surprise to many when his debut was released. It’s an impressive effort for old and new fans alike. Produced by Mick Slaven at Glasgow’s Riverside Studios, the album features a host of guest musicians including Teenage Fanclub’s Norman Blake, Aztec Camera’s Campbell Owens (one-time temporary Trashcan bass player), Skip Reid (one-time fill-in Trashcan drummer), Del Amitri’s Justin Currie and Trashcan, Frank Reader.
Frank contributes backing vocals to “Get On Board”, a bright, orchestral sounding track and also the aforementioned ‘Felicity’, which is more relaxed than the original and includes a new bridge with the title line prominently featured.
The songs are excellent, and while he is obviously not trying to retread the past, the spirit of those songs and the personality behind them shines on every one…a classic in my mind, and I highly recommend it.

“My arse…” I hear you say.
Judging by the tracklisting you’d be right. I have no idea where this CD came from and neither it seems does my old friend Google.
All I can tell you is that the Trashcans’ ‘Only Tongue Can Tell’ is the only track, in my opinion, to achieve pass marks, although Paul Weller’s ‘Sunflower’ would probably make it onto the old iPod.
Apart from that, it’s a pretty poor compilation.
Fine tunes? My arse indeed.

Deadline was a British comic magazine published between 1988 and 1995. Much of the its non-strip content centred on alternative and indie music.
It was most famous for being the original home of the popular strip Tank Girl, co-created by Jamie Hewlett, an English comic book artist and designer, who more recently is known for his work with virtual band Gorillaz – but you knew that already didn’t you.
Every so often Deadline would give away a free tape to promote the current crop of indie artists doing the rounds. This one includes ‘One At A Time’ by the Trashcans alongside tracks from the Ramones, Inspiral Carpets, Soft Parade, Frank & Walters and The Stairs.

…is, as you know, commonly known as HMV – an international entertainment retail chain and one of the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom and Canada.
Walk in to any store and you’ll hear all kinds of music spinning on the in-store jukebox.
If you walked in around May 1993, however, you’d probably have walked straight back out again, judging by what was playing on this in-store promo video.
Included here is the promo video for The Trashcans’ single ‘I’ve Seen Everything. Others include M People, Oceanic, Stereo MCs and Dinosaur Jr – who at a push, would be the only other artist to receive pass marks.
1993? – it was all a big mistake.

Look very closely and you’ll see Mr Livingston trying to cheat at cards.

Way back in February 1991, the Trashcans played a gig at the Paradise Lounge in San Francisco, as part of the Gavin Convention – a kind of get-together for radio industry members – where bands would showcase their material.
If they were lucky, said bands would appear in The Gavin Report, a San Francisco-based radio industry trade publication. This report was founded by radio performer Bill Gavin in 1958 and its Top 40 listings were used for many years by programmers to decide content of programs.
I have no idea if the Trashcans made it into the report, but I am assured by Thea Newcomb, the gig was excellent. The record company gave away the badges along with cakes at the gig. Dundee cakes to be precise, inside a wee plastic trashcan with a little promo sticker on it for their debut album. Magic eh?
Thea is a radio presenter, filmmaker, photographer and has recorded sessions and interviewed the band many times over the years.
Thanks to Thea for sending through the badge.
