A friend of mine – who thinks I’ve taken this blog too far – asked me if there has ever been a book written about the Trashcans.
The only one I was aware of, I said, was the AtoZ book by Finn Hartley which I’ve wrote about before.
But his question got me thinking. Apart from the usual discography encyclopedias, have the Trashcans been immortalised in print elsewhere? A quick googling and you’ll find the answer is yes.
Here’s what I found:
In 1993, Luis Alberto Urrea’s “Across The Wire – Life and Hard Times on the Mexican Border”, offers a compelling and unprecedented look at what life is like for those refugees living on the Mexican side of the US border.

In 2000, James S. Rich’s “Cut My Hair”, tells the story of a young boy growing up in California and how love and music affects his life.

In 2002, Harry Turtledove’s “Counting Up Counting Down”, a collection of science fiction, fantasy and alternate history tales…

In 2001, A. S. Salinas’ “Songs For Drella and Other Disharmonies”, a collection of science fiction short stories. A dozen tales of lunacy and madness, populated by the usual cast of losers and misfits offering poor role-modeling for today’s youth.

And finally, in 2003, John D. Wells’, “The Barfly Boys” documents the trials and tribulations of four young men in Charlottesville, Virginia trying to keep alive their dreams of rock ‘n roll stardom.

So there you have it, the Trashcan Sinatras really are immortal, thanks to some talented writers.
There was one other book I came across which had something to do with XML computer mark-up language. I didn’t include that one – that really would be taking it too far.

…of world domination? Mmmm, perhaps not.
One of my earlier posts will give you all the info you need on the Westwood One Radio Networks.
This is another rare CD which includes the tracks ‘Iceberg’ and ‘Remember Phil’. The latter, as you well know, is in fact ‘Twisted And Bent’ – but when this acoustic session was recorded the song had no official title. It is introduced by Frank as a ‘world exclusive’ and is rather good.
Both tracks eventually appeared on the 7-inch vinyl bootleg which accompanied some copies of the Autopsy fanzine. More on both of these here and here.

Another free compilation CD. This time from The Sunday Times Scotland.
Includes the Trashcans with ‘Leave Me Alone’ alongside other artists including Teenage Fanclub, 1990s, Ocean Colour Scene and Jo Mango – who recently supported the band at the beginning of their 2009 tour at Glasgow’s Oran Mor and who is also signed to their UK record label, Lo-Five Records.

Westwood One is America’s No.1 Radio Network and in 1991 the Trashcans paid them a visit to record a live session.
The show – called The Vault – had 6 segments from different artists featuring a short intro and outro from the announcer and then a live song.
On this CD we have an excellent acoustic version of ‘Only Tongue Can Tell’ from their debut long player ‘Cake’. These CDs are extremely rare and hard to find radio shows with only a limited number made for radio stations that would play this type of music and stations that subscribed to the Westwood One radio network services.
Other artists on the show – which was broadcast in February 1997 – included Devo, Midnight Oil, Living Colour and eh, Culture Club.
Magic!

Over the years the Trashcans have appeared on numerous compilations – some good, some not so – but this one from Greece is possibly the worst.
‘Escape’ appears to be an online lifestyle and culture magazine – a sort of what’s on in Greece type of thing. At one stage in it’s history, before going digital, it was accompanied by a free CD like the one below.
‘I’ve Seen Everything’ by the Trashcans is here amongst an amazing mix of artists including New Order, Dodgy, James Taylor Quartet and er, Incognito.
Whoever put this one together was obviously on some sort of medication as I cannae quite imagine myself listening to ISE whilst weaving my merry way down the French Alps.
Crazy!
