Excellent review from the Daily Record’s Paul English for the Trashcans gig at Glasgow’s Oran Mor on Thursday 12 November 2009.

4 out of 5 ain’t bad – although I’m not sure how Frank will feel about the Hank Marvin comparison.

The Glasgow Herald’s Stuart Morrison gives a five-star review of the Trashcans’ recent Oran Mor gig on Thursday 12 Novemebr 2009.

Here’s the review in full…

Candidates for the Kevin McDermott award for bands who should be a lot bigger than they are, Trashcan Sinatras arrived onstage at Oran Mor with a new album to show off and on this evidence, a very bright future indeed.

The album, In The Music, is a beautiful thing and got a good airing here. I Wish You’d Met Her opened proceedings and set the tone for the evening, loping along, as it did, in typically laid-back fashion. And whilst they can be almost too laid back for their own good sometimes, In The Music is their fifth studio album in nineteen years, there is something indefinably right about them. Certainly, they sit neatly in the softer end of the indie market, alongside the likes of Travis and Belle and Sebastian, but underpinning their songs is, not only superb musicianship, but also beautiful arrangements. You can hear that the lengthy gaps between releases have not been wasted.

Of course, they were playing to the converted. The West End was out in force and Oran Mor was packed with people who knew all the songs and had, clearly, loved this band from the start. And whilst the new album dominated the set, the back catalogue yielded the likes of I’ve Seen Everything and the lovely Weightlifting.

The stand out, for me, though, was their tribute to the late Syd Barrett, Oranges and Apples. It’s a wonderfully lazy, psychedelic tribute to Pink Floyd’s founder and in one song, summed up everything the Trashcans do so well.

Here’s the official programme from the 1990 Reading Festival.

1990 was the second year under the Mean Fiddler banner and the Trashcans were in fine company alongside bands like The Fall, The Cramps and The Pixies with Faith No More and Janes Addiction there to satisfy the headbangers (although Janes Addiction did not perform as Perry Farrell lost his voice).

The headliners might not inspire much joy in todays context, but at the time the Inspiral Carpets were riding high in the charts in the UK and both the Pixies and the Cramps had very strong UK followings, with both bands being far more popular abroad than they were in their home country.

Compared to Glastonbury in 1990, the Reading Festival was still relatively minor league although attendance figures did peak at around 40,000 when the Trashcans took to the Mean Fiddler stage on Saturday 25 August – ahem!

Here’s what the programme says:

If the name of this five piece band from Irvine in Ayrshire makes you brace yourself for some kind of thrash metal onslaught then you can relax.

Their winsome wistful tunes evoke the pitiful aura of a big soul in a small place with his/her eyes permanently fixed to unattainable horizons.

The title track of their debut EP ‘Obscurity Knocks’ conjures up just such a mood with its lush spacey sounds courtesy of producer John Leckie and guitar licks worthy of an honorary fellowship to the Johnny Marr College of axemanship.

Said EP and the release of their first LP ‘Cake’ on Go Discs has had some critics hailing them as the beginning of a new dawn for Scottish pop and comparing them positively with the glorious heyday of Postcard Records (remember Aztec Camera and Orange Juice) ten years ago.

Their word skills and toon talents are not in dispute but after the first flurry of acclaim has died down only time will tell if they have really inherited Frankie boy’s genius.

Part of the Trashcans 2009 UK Tour takes in the Borders Music & Comedy Festival.

In amongst all the bands (Idlewild, Broken Records) and comedians, they have a date with the Kelso Tait Hall.

Here’s the press ad from the Sunday Mail – who this week, have managed to get the date and venue correct.

Here’s a couple of adverts from the Sunday Mail for the Scottish leg of the Trashcans’ 2009 UK tour.

Apparently, they are playing Oran Mor twice this time round (top picture). The 16 Nov date should of course read Aberdeen’s Warehouse.

Proofreaders? Tut tut!
