To Sir, With Love…

…is a British film from 1967 starring Sidney Poitier and Lulu that deals with social and racial issues in an inner city school.

Throughout their career the TCS have covered several songs. When they first started playing live, they would throw in a couple of cover versions to fill out their set – Van Morrison, The Smiths or Velvet Underground – so, it’s no surprise that they make such a good, if not, better job of other people’s tracks, and ‘To Sir, With Love’ is no exception.

Here’s a rare 12-inch one track white label promo.

On this copy there is no indication as to what it is promoting – some copies do have a handwritten title, which helps. The etched kangaroo on the flip side is the only clue as to what era it comes from.

The inner ring of the playing side is etched with ‘I’m off to the Ladies, she’s off to the Gents’ – a lyric from the single ‘The Main Attraction’.

As this was published as part of a press release, I can’t imagine there being too many of them around.

Here’s the European (German) release of debut single ‘Obscurity Knocks’.

All tracks are the same but the CD was released in a jewel case, rather than the card sleeve of the regular version.

The Sound Of Purple

‘The Sound Of Purple’ compilation brought together several local bands and others from around the UK, as part of a business project for Ayr College.

There were 17 tracks on the CD including ‘Duty Free’ – a new song at the time of release – by the ‘Cat Protection League’ otherwise known as the Trashcans.

It is believed the Cat Protection League refers to the number of homeless cats that used to prowl around the vicinity of Shabby Road Studios.

The ‘Dream Reality’ CD was released around July 1997 to raise money for the charity Children 1st (The Royal Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children).

Eighteen of the best Scottish artists and bands including Annie Lennox, Eddi Reader, Simple Minds, BMX Bandits, The Silencers and the Trashcan Sinatras contributed songs to the album.

The version of ‘Stainless Stephen’ was the alternate take which appeared on both the ‘On A B Road’ double CD compilations (BoBame 002/004).

It is titled ‘Stainless Steven’ on this compilation.
