Now, write it out a hundred times!

Ah, takes me back to my school days when I was chucked out of art class for allowing the word ‘fuck’ to pass through my lips. My teacher proceeded to give me a lecture on said word and gave me 100 lines as well – I wouldn’t have minded that much, but I was in 5th year at secondary school! Crazy hippy teacher!

Anyhow, here’s a small advert which appeared in the NME to promote 9th single, ‘To Sir, With Love’

…but plenty of chocolate – was how Johnny Dee summed up debut album, ‘Cake’.

A bit of a cliché perhaps, but he still gives it pass marks in his review for Record Mirror…

The review appeared alongside a full page advert for the album too…

Number One was a British pop music weekly magazine which ran for around nine years, mostly during the 1980s.

Aimed, mainly at the teenage market, one of the most popular aspects was that it published the singles and albums charts every week. However, the magazine was in direct competition to another popular magazine at the time – Smash Hits.

Smash Hits had a bigger circulation (almost tenfold), more features and articles and was of a similar price, so it was no surprise when Number One eventually shut up shop around 1992. The final issue carried details of the features and interviews that would appear in the next issue, but was never published.

History lesson over.

Here’s a review from Stuart Butler of the Trashcan’s gig at the London ICA (The Institute of Contemporary Arts) from way back – 28 June 1990, to be precise.

Les Inrockuptibles is a French art criticism magazine. The magazine was instrumental in popularising indie rock music with bands such as The Smiths and The House of Love. They produced several tribute records, including the influential ‘I’m Your Fan’ to Leonard Cohen in 1991 and ‘The Smiths Is Dead’ in 1996.

Here’s a cutting taken from the magazine promoting second album, ‘I’ve Seen Everything’.

Here’s a half page advert taken from Minneapolis based music magazine ‘Cake’ to promote the release of second album ‘I’ve Seen Everything’.

I’m not familiar with this magazine, but it’s a bit like the UK’s NME.
