Long deleted classic 10-track debut album, which scaled the heights of the UK charts (No.74) in 1990. But then we all know the charts are pish. It was more successful in the States though, thanks mostly to exposure through the influential college radio circuit.

Produced by John Leckie, Roger Béchirian and the band, the album was described by UK music magazine Q as ‘…an album for smiling enigmatically and turning up overcoat collars to’.

Right, where’s ma coat?

4-track promo for ‘Hayfever’. This was released in the same digi-pak as the regular CD, which is itself, identical.

There seems to be a couple of these going around. No idea who wrote the words on the second sticker, but I’m thinking of accepting their invitation into claustrophobia.

Dine-ing Out With Frank

Simon Dine – who ‘discovered’ the Trashcans – is the man behind Noonday Underground.

Described as ‘Grace Slick wailing over the Bullitt soundtrack’, the album ‘Surface Noise’ sees Frank Reader lending his vocal chords to a couple of songs. ‘Windmills’ and ‘Barcelona’ are both filled with various loops, strings and are very down-tempo which works perfectly with his vocal delivery. Magic stuff.

Other notable contributors include Paul Weller and Peter Rose.

There are still copies of this album kicking around, maybe not on vinyl but certainly on CD – seek and ye shall find.

In some circles this record could be described as something of a Holy Grail.

A 14-track vinyl LP with full colour picture sleeve complete with original picture/lyric inner. For me, this album just ebbs and flows with a wonderful variety of songs, and I think if I were to introduce someone to the TCS, I would sit them down and play them this.

If you do ever find this album, buy it – it’ll be worth whatever you spend on it.

‘Wild Mountainside’ 3-track EP with promo stickered sleeve. Seems to be just the regular release with no indications of being a promo CD.

‘Freetime’ and ‘What Women Do To Men’ are both live tracks, recorded at the Howden Park Centre, Livingston in 2005.

The front cover photograph – the location I’m unsure about – was by Martin Gray. View more of his work here.
