1-track CD promo distributed to radio and press to promote the UK release of the album ‘Weightlifting’.

Card inlay housed in a stickered jewel case. The sticker – note the spelling mistake – has a release date of 8th November, whilst the inlay card has the correct date of 18th October.

Look Out For That Iceburg!

2-track bootleg 7-inch single that, I think, accompanied some copies of the TCS fanzine, “Autopsy”.

This fanzine was published by TCS mailing list members Sarah Frederiksen and Chris Dooley. Running to approximately 20 pages it included lyrics, a discography, a band history, trivial facts and biographies. There were around 250 copies printed. The ‘Iceburg’ single, according to official sources, had no connection with Sarah or Chris, so I am unsure as to who actually produced it.

The two tracks are ‘Iceburg’ on the A-side and ‘Remember Phil’ on the flip side, which is, of course ‘Twisted and Bent’.

The uncredited cover photographs are, on the front, some penguins and a ship’s Captain on the reverse. No idea who the Captain is but the handwritten note underneath states ‘Look after my best girl, but don’t flirt with her”.

An unofficial release that is extremely hard-to-find.

A song originally written by Randy Newman and recorded in 1967 by Harpers Bizarre, this song grew out of some Shabby Road sessions with Sokabe from Japanese band Sunny Day Service

This is the initial 4-track digi-pak pressing which had a limited release.

I think the packaging – designed by kato masako – is wonderful on this release and is typical of Japanese attention to detail.

Very rare 7-inch Japanese promo released alongside the digi-pak pressing.

The artwork was again designed by kato masako. The photograph (not credited) on the cover is taken from the Ayrshire hills looking out onto Ailsa Craig an island in the outer Firth of Clyde, Scotland.

Limited edition promo sample 2-disc 4-track EP (originally released in 1999).

Issued to radio stations & reviewers ahead of the actual release date to promote the album release, includes bonus DVD containing a live performance in Tokyo’s Club Quattro 21st May 2005, lyric booklet picture sleeve plus custom stickered back insert with obi-strip. The inner ring of both the CD and DVD are printed with the words ‘Sample’ and ‘Loaned’.

The snow photographs within the booklet were taken at Glasgow’s Botanic Gardens by John Douglas. The artwork was designed by Shinsaku Murota from It’s A Beautiful Day Ltd.

A great example of how music packaging should be done.
