Does anyone remember the Rainmate?
You know, that strange contraption which appeared on yer Granny’s heid when it started raining. As a wee boy, I always remember her whipping this weird looking thing out of her shopping trolley as soon as it started raining – a clear, plastic hood she’d tie around her chin before going down the town for her messages.
Something like this (not my Gran of course)…
‘…Soaked to the skin…’ of course, has a connection to the rainmate in Trashcan world. It is, as you well know, a part of the opening couplet to the very wonderful ‘The Genius I Was’ from third album, ‘A Happy Pocket’, …

you and me
soaked to the skin
dead waist down, on the evidence
we’re guilty as sin”
Fantastic don’t you think? What’s also fantastic though is another Trashcan fan site and it’s called Rainmates Forever – clever eh? I’m not 100% sure who runs it, but it could be Randy from the old forum/message board as I recognise a few of the pieces on it.
It’s good there’s another blog like this, keeps the Trashcan name out there. Anyway, go and have a wee look – there’s things on there that’s not on here and things on here that’s not on there – so between the two, you’re covered.

Let me guess. The Smiths?
Here’s a review of the Trashcans debut album ‘Cake’, which appeared August of 1990 in Japanese music magazine Crossbeat.
10 out 10 no less.
Translation:
We have been waiting and waiting for this first album from the Trash Can Sinatras, and the two singles that have already been released from it are outstanding. Their guitar sound reminds us of early Aztec Camera or The Housemartins and that clear guitar sound, so familiar to “that-band-that-starts-with-S.” (sic) I don’t think I am exaggerating at all.
The sound and excitement that this album gives you are reminders of that sound. If you categorise them as ‘80s British acoustic music, they are very orthodox. But you can see their originality in the last song on this album which has not only emotional lyrics but also a collage of sound. The Trash Can Sinatras prompt us to appreciate something which we might otherwise take for granted, like the blue sky peering out from behind the clouds, and to remember something important that we are on the verge of forgetting.
