…you bleedin’ well ask proper!” So said Lulu in the film ‘To Sir, With Love’ – or did she shout?

A classic cover version backed with 3 other tracks, ‘Claw’, A Boy And A Girl’ and ‘You Only Live Twice’.

‘You Only Live Twice’ appeared on the soundtrack to Irvine Welsh’s stage production of ‘Maribou Stork Nightmares’.

This is the 7-inch vinyl format…

Third single from ‘A Happy Pocket’ was ‘How Can I Apply…?’

Just two tracks on this 7-inch single – both magic.

The girl on the front cover is reportedly a one-time girlfriend of Colin Dunsmuir, the band’s photographer at the time.

Oh So Pretty…

‘The Main Attraction’ EP was the first single from third album ‘A Happy Pocket’, and was released in limited quantities (possibly 2,000).

According to a posting on the TCS mailing list, the idea behind releasing this single as a limited format was to increase awareness of the band after such a long period out of the public eye.

With TMA not being an obvious single choice for the band, they let their record label ‘get on with it’ so to speak, before releasing a properly distributed record a couple of months later.

This is the 4-track 7-inch release…

…were a moody sounding Nick Cave/Scott Walker-esque 5-piece fronted by Peter Rose – co-engineer on ‘Cake’ and also the mainman behind ‘Ostle Bay’, a collaboration with TCS.

Johnson released a total of four singles, three of which are included here.

The first of these singles, ‘Tripping With The Moonlight’ was a limited 7-inch release of around 500 copies and was recorded and produced by Frank Reader at Shabby Road Studios in Kilmarnock…

All singles were released on their own ‘Play’ imprint.

The label was also home to ‘Heirloom’ – another TCS related artist – who at one time included Jody Stoddart. John, Paul and Grant Wilson have all played with them along the way and Davy Hughes’ brother Neil played bass.

To Sir, With Love…

…is a British film from 1967 starring Sidney Poitier and Lulu that deals with social and racial issues in an inner city school.

Throughout their career the TCS have covered several songs. When they first started playing live, they would throw in a couple of cover versions to fill out their set – Van Morrison, The Smiths or Velvet Underground – so, it’s no surprise that they make such a good, if not, better job of other people’s tracks, and ‘To Sir, With Love’ is no exception.

Here’s a rare 12-inch one track white label promo.

On this copy there is no indication as to what it is promoting – some copies do have a handwritten title, which helps. The etched kangaroo on the flip side is the only clue as to what era it comes from.

The inner ring of the playing side is etched with ‘I’m off to the Ladies, she’s off to the Gents’ – a lyric from the single ‘The Main Attraction’.

As this was published as part of a press release, I can’t imagine there being too many of them around.
