Demos And Debris

This double CD is a collection of demos and sessions of released and some unreleased songs, recorded between 1986 and 1997.

The songs were taken from various sources with varying degrees of quality. They were then compiled by the band and there’s a brief history of each in the liner notes.

There were three different pressings of this release. The initial pressing (this one) had some tracking errors, whilst later reissues resolved these errors. Get the full story here.

I like the signed Frank Sinatra photograph on this one.

On A B Road…Again

22-track CD-R which was released exclusively to members of the TCS mailing list.

This was made available around the summer of 1998 and was a follow-up release to the single ‘On A B Road’ compilation from 1996. The original B-Road compilation had 21 tracks and the packaging was nearly identical.

Only 21 of the tracks are listed on the insert, the omitted track being ‘Aberration’.

Although this is a CD-R, it was made with the permission of Go! Discs, who quite kindly ‘looked the other way’.

This CD was the third single from debut album ‘Cake’.

‘Circling The Circumference’ was backed with ‘My Mistake’ and ‘White Horses’ – an interpretation of the 1960’s ‘The White Horses’ TV series theme tune.

The solo on the title track is a cracker.

To Sir, With Love…

…is a British film from 1967 starring Sidney Poitier and Lulu that deals with social and racial issues in an inner city school.

Throughout their career the TCS have covered several songs. When they first started playing live, they would throw in a couple of cover versions to fill out their set – Van Morrison, The Smiths or Velvet Underground – so, it’s no surprise that they make such a good, if not, better job of other people’s tracks, and ‘To Sir, With Love’ is no exception.

Here’s a rare 12-inch one track white label promo.

On this copy there is no indication as to what it is promoting – some copies do have a handwritten title, which helps. The etched kangaroo on the flip side is the only clue as to what era it comes from.

The inner ring of the playing side is etched with ‘I’m off to the Ladies, she’s off to the Gents’ – a lyric from the single ‘The Main Attraction’.

As this was published as part of a press release, I can’t imagine there being too many of them around.

An advance preview release of album ‘Weightlifting’.

This CD included the final mixes of All The Dark Horses, Usually and Weightlifting. It also included 11 live tracks from Le Bataclan, in Paris, from November 10, 1996. There were plans to release this as a separate CD with the title “Francis in Paris (Paris is in France)”, but this never materialised.

The ‘Weightlifting EP’ was released to coincide with the sold-out shows at the Troubadour in Los Angeles in 2004 and the band’s appearance at the South-By-Southwest festival of the same year.

I like the illustrations on this release – reminds me of the old first-aid books from school.
